Oil slops and oily sludge are generated from various activities in the oil and gas industry, including crude oil storage, tank cleaning, oil transportation and petroleum production. Due to the complex mixture of oil, water and solid particles, these wastes require professional treatment before final disposal.
With increasing environmental requirements worldwide, efficient oil recovery and waste reduction technologies have become essential for oil waste treatment companies.
Recently, KES Separation completed the delivery of a customized oil slops evaporation and separation system to Africa. The project was delivered to our long-term partner, a professional waste treatment company in Southern Africa. After the successful application of KES thermal desorption technology, the customer continued to choose KES Separation for another waste treatment solution to improve oily waste management and resource recovery.
Previously, the customer mainly used a boiler heating system combined with a disc separator for oil-water separation. After years of operation, equipment aging and increasing maintenance requirements became major challenges. Based on the customer’s actual working conditions, KES Separation proposed a new electric heating evaporation and separation solution.
The complete system is integrated into a customized 20ft container, providing a compact and mobile treatment solution. The containerized design allows convenient transportation by SOC container, flat rack container or bulk vessel, while also reducing onsite installation requirements. This modular design has always been one of the key factors highly valued by the customer.
The system is equipped with two stainless-steel heating reactors. Each reactor has a working volume of 1,500 liters, providing a total heating capacity of 3,000 liters. The two reactors can operate alternately, improving processing efficiency and ensuring continuous operation.

During the treatment process, controlled heating is applied to separate water from oily waste and improve the concentration of recoverable oil. The processed material is then transferred to a high-speed disc separator for further separation.
After the evaporation process, the concentrated oily mixture enters the disc separator for further purification. The high-speed centrifugal separation technology enables efficient separation of oil, water and fine solid particles. The separator is designed with a treatment capacity of 3–5 m³/h and a bowl speed of up to 6,600 RPM, ensuring effective separation performance under different operating conditions. The system is also equipped with VFD-controlled feed pumps, operation water pump and slag discharge pump, providing continuous and stable operation throughout the treatment process.

Compared with traditional heating methods, the upgraded system provides advantages including easier operation, reduced maintenance requirements and improved energy management. The modular design also makes it suitable for remote areas and overseas projects where installation conditions may be limited.
The successful delivery of this oil slops treatment system represents another practical application of KES Separation’s waste management technology in the African market. By combining customized engineering design with proven separation technology, KES Separation continues to help customers recover valuable resources and achieve more sustainable waste treatment.
