Mud Gas Separator

Mud Gas Separator is commonly called a poor boy degasser. A Mud Gas Separator is special equipment used to handle gas invaded into the drilling fluid. The density and viscosity of the drilling fluid can be greatly affected by the invaded gas. In some dangerous situations, this can lead to well kick or blowout accidents. The combination of a mud gas separator and a flare ignition device can effectively handle the invaded gas. Mud gas separators are widely used in the global oil & gas drilling industry.

Mud gas separators capture and separate large volumes of free gas in the drilling fluid. In a “KICK” situation, this vessel separates the mud and the gas by allowing it to flow over baffle plates. The gas is then forced through a line and vented to a flare.

A “KICK” situation occurs when the annular hydrostatic pressure in a drilling well temporarily (and usually relatively suddenly) falls below the formation or pore pressure in a permeable section downhole, before control of the situation is lost.
